Panchthar is a district located in Province No. 1 of Nepal. It was established in 1962 and was originally a part of the larger Ilam district. Panchthar district was created by separating the western part of Ilam and naming it after the five (panch) historical places in the area – Basantapur, Phidim, Yangwarak, Oyam and Hilihang.
The district covers an area of 1,241 square kilometers and has a population of around 191,817 people (as per the 2011 Nepal census). The majority of the population in Panchthar is of Nepali ethnicity, with a significant number of Rai, Limbu, and other indigenous communities also residing in the area.
Panchthar is known for its natural beauty, with the district being situated in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas. The district is home to several religious and cultural sites, including the Pathibhara Devi Temple, the Phidim bazaar, and the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.
